Island Overview
June 12 brings settled, dry conditions across the whole of Crete. No rain is expected anywhere from the far west to Sitia in the east. Daytime highs range from 26.5°C at Ierapetra to 30°C around Agios Nikolaos and Elounda. A light-to-moderate northerly flow keeps conditions manageable, and the sea has warmed to between 23 and 24°C along all coasts.
North Coast vs South Coast
The island's mountain spine is producing a clear split in sky cover today. Chania is fully overcast and records the strongest wind of the day at 22 km/h. Hersonissos and Malia also sit under heavy cloud. Rethymno and Heraklion are partly cloudy, with highs of 28 and 29°C respectively.
Cross to the south coast and conditions are notably brighter. Makrigialos is reporting a clear sky, and Ierapetra is mainly clear. Although Ierapetra's daytime high is the lowest on the island at 26.5°C, its overnight minimum of nearly 22°C is the warmest anywhere today. The south retains heat well into the evening.
The Mountains
Cloud is wrapping the northern flanks of the White Mountains above Chania and Psiloritis above Rethymno, adding to the overcast feel along the north coast. At altitude, temperatures fall several degrees below sea level. No precipitation is expected even at elevation, but walkers heading onto the high plateaux should carry a layer.
Sea, Wind and UV
Seas are calm to slight across the island. The choppiest water is off Chania at 0.86m; east-coast locations such as Agios Nikolaos and Elounda are near-flat at around 0.3m. Sea temperature holds at a consistent 23 to 24°C from coast to coast. Wind gusts stay below 22 km/h everywhere and fall under 15 km/h across the south and east.
UV peaks at 8.3 to 8.55 across all locations, placing it in the high category. Exposure is significant from 11:00 to 16:00 regardless of cloud cover. Overcast skies on the north coast do not reduce UV to safe levels.
Swim Verdict
Good swimming conditions at all coastal locations today. The calmest and sunniest water is found along the east coast around Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and Sitia, and along the south coast at Makrigialos and Ierapetra. North-coast beaches are equally warm but swimmers at Chania will find a moderate chop and grey skies overhead.
Practical Tip for Today
UV sits firmly in the high band across the whole island, including cloudy areas. Apply SPF 30 or higher before going out, reapply after every swim, and seek shade between noon and 16:00. A wide-brim hat is worth carrying regardless of where on the island you are spending the day.
