Back to newsSix species of pufferfish are now present in Greek waters, including around Crete. These species, some originally from the Red Sea and Indian Ocean, have spread into the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal. Pufferfish are highly toxic and should never be touched or eaten. Their spines and internal organs contain tetrodotoxin, a poison with no known antidote.
Swimmers and snorkelers around Crete may occasionally spot them in shallow coastal waters, particularly during summer months. If you see a pufferfish, observe it from a safe distance and do not attempt to handle it. Fishermen who accidentally catch one should release it carefully without touching it directly. Local fish markets and restaurants in Greece do not sell pufferfish, so there is no risk from consumption at dining establishments.
