Back to newsCrete is home to some of the most spectacular gorges in Greece, offering hiking experiences for all fitness levels. The island's gorges range from easy coastal walks to dramatic landscapes carved by sheer vertical cliffs.
The most visited is Samaria Gorge in the White Mountains, one of Europe's longest at 16 km, open May through October. Imbros Gorge near Chania is a shorter, more accessible alternative at around 8 km. In eastern Crete, Sarakina Gorge near Ierapetra features a river trail with natural pools. Aradena Gorge, also in Chania prefecture, rewards experienced hikers with stunning views and a historic iron bridge.
Visitors should wear sturdy footwear, carry water, and start early to avoid midday heat. Most gorges charge a small entry fee and require a moderate level of fitness.
