Back to newsA series of earthquakes have been recorded off the coast of Crete and near the island of Karpathos. The largest tremor measured 3.8 on the Richter scale. Seismic activity of this magnitude is common in the eastern Mediterranean, one of the most seismically active regions in Europe, and earthquakes below 4.0 are generally not felt strongly on land.
No damage or injuries have been reported. Tourists currently visiting Crete do not need to take any special precautions. If you do feel a minor tremor during your stay, stay calm, move away from windows, and follow guidance from local authorities or your accommodation staff. Ferry services to nearby islands, including Karpathos, are operating normally. Local emergency services are monitoring the situation as a standard precaution.
