Scientists Crack Medieval Crete's Red Pigment Code in Byzantine Frescoes

Researchers have published the first scientific study examining the pigments used by medieval Byzantine painters to create the vivid red murals found in churches across Crete. The study reveals how these painters sourced and applied specific mineral and organic materials to achieve the distinctive reds that have remained striking for centuries in frescoes throughout the island. For visitors to Crete, this research adds new depth to exploring the island's extraordinary collection of Byzantine churches and monasteries. Sites such as the Monastery of Arkadi, the churches of the Amari Valley, and numerous rural chapels across the Cretan countryside contain some of the finest examples of these painted interiors. Many are open to visitors, particularly outside peak summer hours. Modest dress is required when entering churches. Guided tours focused on Byzantine art are available from Heraklion and Rethymno.
