Back to newsEarly one morning, a group of irregular migrants arrived by sea on the southern coast of Crete. Greek coast guard and local authorities responded to the arrival, which is a relatively common occurrence along Crete's remote southern shoreline due to its proximity to North Africa. The area involved is largely uninhabited and away from main tourist destinations. This type of event does not typically affect visitors to the island. Popular beaches and resorts in the south of Crete, such as those around Matala, Plakias, and Paleochora, remain open and accessible. Tourists traveling along the southern coastal road or visiting isolated beaches may occasionally notice an increased coast guard presence, but this does not present any safety concern for travelers. Normal tourism activities across the island continue unaffected.
