El Niño Intensifies: Greece Braces for Record Heat and Wildfires This Summer

Friday, 3 July 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
The United Nations has issued a warning that the ongoing El Nino climate phenomenon is rapidly intensifying and is expected to reach high intensity between July and September 2026. El Nino typically brings hotter and drier conditions to the Mediterranean, including Crete. Tourists visiting the island this summer should expect above-average temperatures and increased wildfire risk in forested and rural areas. Stay informed through local weather services, follow any fire safety advisories from Greek authorities, and carry water when hiking or exploring inland areas. Coastal breezes may offer some relief, but midday heat could be more intense than usual. Check conditions before planning outdoor excursions, particularly in the Lefka Ori mountains or the Samaria Gorge area, and consider scheduling strenuous activities in the early morning hours.
