Back to newsGreece's Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has signed a cooperation agreement with ADMIE, the national electricity grid operator, to strengthen wildfire protection around energy infrastructure across the country, including Crete. Under the agreement, ADMIE will carry out vegetation clearing, branch pruning, and the creation of firebreaks near power lines and electrical installations, following guidelines set by the Fire Brigade.
The initiative aims to reduce the risk of wildfires igniting from or spreading through electricity infrastructure during the high-risk summer months. For visitors to Crete, this means improved grid resilience and a reduced chance of fire-related power outages in tourist areas. Travelers should still follow standard fire safety advice during summer: avoid open flames in nature, do not discard cigarettes outdoors, and check local Civil Protection alerts if conditions are dry and windy.
