Back to newsThe Region of Crete took part in a seminar focused on the "Asterousia Trails" hiking network, a growing initiative to develop and promote trekking routes across the Asterousia mountain range in southern Crete. The Asterousia mountains run along the southern coast between the Mesara plain and the Libyan Sea, offering rugged terrain, gorges, and remote coastal villages largely untouched by mass tourism.
The seminar, titled "Together for the Asterousia," brought together regional stakeholders to coordinate efforts around this trail network. For hikers and outdoor enthusiasts visiting Crete, the Asterousia Trails represent an emerging destination for off-the-beaten-path walking holidays. The area is accessible from Heraklion and Matala. Visitors interested in the trails should check with local hiking clubs or the Region of Crete tourism office for updated route maps and conditions before setting out.
