Greek authorities have recorded a significant rise in pufferfish (lagocephalus) sightings across Greece, including frequent appearances along Crete's coastline. The lagocephalus is a toxic invasive species originally from the Indo-Pacific that entered the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal. Its flesh and organs contain tetrodotoxin, a powerful poison with no antidote. Tourists should never handle or consume pufferfish found on beaches or in local markets. If you see one while swimming, keep your distance but there is no danger from proximity in the water. Do not buy or eat any fish you cannot identify with certainty. If you suspect you have consumed pufferfish, seek emergency medical help immediately. Local fish restaurants are safe, as licensed vendors do not sell this species.
