Crete's mountainous interior offers natural relief from summer heat, with several areas staying significantly cooler than coastal resorts even during heatwaves. Elevated villages in the White Mountains (Lefka Ori), the Lassithi Plateau, and the Psiloritis massif benefit from altitude, shaded gorges, and dense vegetation that keep temperatures noticeably lower. The Lassithi Plateau, sitting at around 840 metres, and mountain villages like Anogia, Spili, and Argyroupoli regularly record temperatures 8 to 12 degrees Celsius below those on the coast. For tourists struggling with peak summer heat, a day trip inland is a practical option: roads are accessible by car, local tavernas are open, and the scenery is worth the detour. Visitors should bring a light layer as evenings at altitude can turn cool even in July and August.
