Back to newsA new wildfire has broken out in Gazi, a coastal area located just west of Heraklion city. Winds of 7 Beaufort (approximately 50-60 km/h) are fanning the blaze, making containment more difficult. Firefighting crews are on the scene. Tourists staying in or traveling through the Heraklion region should avoid the Gazi area until authorities confirm the fire is under control. Road access near the fire zone may be restricted. Monitor local emergency announcements and your accommodation's guidance. If you see smoke or flames while driving on the coastal road west of Heraklion, turn around and seek an alternate route. The general Heraklion city center and airport remain unaffected at this time, but conditions can change rapidly given the strong winds.
