Back to newsTwo earthquakes struck near Gavdos, the small island south of Crete, in quick succession. The first measured 5.3 on the Richter scale, followed by a 4.6 aftershock. Gavdos lies approximately 65 kilometers south of the Sfakia region on Crete's southern coast. Earthquakes in this area are not unusual, as Crete sits in one of Europe's most seismically active zones. No casualties or significant damage have been reported at this time. Tourists currently on Crete or Gavdos should remain calm and follow standard earthquake safety guidelines: stay away from unstable structures, avoid cliff edges and coastal areas immediately after a tremor as a precaution against any wave activity, and monitor local authorities for updates. Ferry connections to Gavdos may be temporarily affected; check with local port authorities before traveling.
