Back to newsGreece has introduced new restrictions banning sun loungers and umbrellas on 251 beaches across the country, effective immediately. The measure aims to protect coastal ecosystems and preserve free public access to the shoreline, in line with existing laws that prohibit commercial equipment from occupying more than 50% of any beach. Tourists visiting Crete should check in advance whether their chosen beach is affected, as rental services for chairs and parasols may no longer be available at certain locations. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own beach gear, including towels, portable umbrellas, and shade accessories. Local authorities are responsible for enforcement, and fines may apply to operators who do not comply. The changes are part of a broader national effort to balance tourism with environmental protection along Greece's coastline.
