Back to newsThe main road connecting Heraklion city to Moires, a key route through the Messara plain in central Crete, is currently lacking adequate street lighting along significant stretches. Residents and regular drivers have raised safety concerns, as poor visibility increases the risk of accidents for both motorists and pedestrians, particularly after dark. The situation has prompted calls to local authorities for urgent improvements to the lighting infrastructure. Tourists driving this route, which is commonly used to access the Messara valley, the Phaistos archaeological site, and southern coastal villages, should exercise extra caution when traveling after sunset. Reducing speed, using full headlights, and staying alert for pedestrians and cyclists near unlit sections is strongly advised until repairs or new lighting installations are completed.
