Back to newsThe Greek Red Cross has issued a warning to tourists about pufferfish (fugu) in the Mediterranean Sea. Pufferfish have been increasingly spotted in Greek coastal waters, including around Crete, and pose a risk to swimmers and beachgoers. The fish contain tetrodotoxin, a highly toxic substance with no antidote. Tourists are advised not to touch or handle any pufferfish encountered in the water or washed up on beaches. If stung or if contact occurs, seek medical attention immediately. Local authorities and beach staff may be able to assist with identification. The presence of pufferfish is linked to warming Mediterranean waters. Visitors should stay alert while swimming, snorkeling, or diving, and report sightings to lifeguards or local authorities.
