Crete, the largest Greek island, boasts 1,046 km (650 miles) of coastline offering some of the most remarkable beaches in the Mediterranean. The island's beaches vary widely, from the iconic pink sands of Elafonisi in the southwest to the striking palm-fringed lagoon of Vai on the eastern tip. Balos Lagoon, accessible by boat or a short hike near Kissamos, draws visitors for its shallow turquoise waters. Falassarna, also in western Crete, consistently ranks among Greece's top beaches. Further east, Seitan Limania offers dramatic scenery for more adventurous swimmers. Matala, on the south coast, combines a sandy bay with historic cave dwellings. Most major beaches have sunbeds, umbrellas, and nearby tavernas. Visitors should note that some remote beaches require a 4x4 vehicle or boat transfer to reach.
