Invasive Puffer Fish Threaten Crete's Fishing Industry

Monday, 15 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Invasive puffer fish (Lagocephalus sceleratus) have become a serious threat to fishing communities across Crete. Originally from the Red Sea, these fish arrived via the Suez Canal and have spread throughout the Mediterranean. Cretan fishermen report that puffer fish destroy nets and consume nearly everything in their path, severely reducing catches of traditional species like sea bream and sea bass. For visitors, the practical concern is twofold: puffer fish are highly toxic if consumed and should never be eaten under any circumstances. If you see one on the beach or offered at a market, avoid contact. Additionally, local seafood availability and prices at restaurants may be affected as fish stocks decline. Cretan fishing communities are calling on EU authorities for intervention, but the problem is expected to persist throughout the summer season.
