Back to newsEach year in late May, Crete commemorates the Battle of Crete, the fierce 10-day airborne invasion launched by Nazi Germany on May 20, 1941. The battle, one of the most significant of World War II in the Mediterranean, saw Allied forces and Cretan civilians resist German paratroopers across the island before ultimately withdrawing. Thousands of soldiers and civilians lost their lives.
Official ceremonies take place at war memorials and cemeteries across the island, including the German War Cemetery at Maleme near Chania, the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Souda, and central Heraklion. Events typically include wreath-laying, military parades, and cultural gatherings throughout the final week of May.
Visitors are welcome to attend public ceremonies. Expect some road closures around memorial sites during official events. The Chania region sees the highest concentration of commemorative activity.
