The individuals were spotted by a Frontex surveillance aircraft operating in the area. Rescue and border patrol vessels were dispatched to assist. This type of maritime activity is ongoing in the eastern Mediterranean and is handled by Greek and European authorities. For tourists visiting Crete, there is no direct safety concern or impact on travel, beaches, or tourism infrastructure. Ferry and flight services continue to operate normally.
