Omalos Hosts Triple Celebration of Pentecost, Nature, and Cretan History

Monday, 1 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
The village of Omalos, on the Lefka Ori plateau in western Crete, hosted a triple celebration bringing together Pentecost (Holy Spirit), a tribute to nature, and a commemoration of the Cretan Resistance during World War II. The event drew attendees with a mix of religious ceremony, outdoor festivities, and historical remembrance. Omalos sits at around 1,050 meters elevation and is best known as the gateway to the Samaria Gorge, one of Europe's longest gorges. Visitors to the area can combine cultural events like this with hiking the gorge, which is currently open for the season. The plateau is approximately 37 kilometers south of Chania. If you are planning a visit, the drive from Chania takes about 45 minutes via the Omalos road, and early morning departures are recommended for the gorge hike.
