Back to newsA minor earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale occurred in the sea between Crete and the island of Kasos, to the southeast of the island. The tremor had a shallow focal depth of 6.8 kilometres. Earthquakes of this magnitude are common in the eastern Mediterranean region and are generally not felt strongly on land. No damage or injuries have been reported. Tourists visiting Crete, including the eastern areas around Sitia and Ierapetra closest to the epicentre, can continue their plans normally. Crete sits in one of Europe's most seismically active zones, and small tremors occur regularly without posing any risk to visitors or infrastructure.
