Crete's New Kastelli Airport to Open in 2028, Replacing Heraklion Terminal

Monday, 11 May 2026/Google News/1
Crete is preparing to open a new international airport at Kastelli, located approximately 40 kilometers east of Heraklion near the town of Gonies in the Pediada region. The new facility will replace Heraklion's current Nikos Kazantzakis Airport, which has long operated beyond its capacity. Kastelli airport is designed to handle up to 18 million passengers per year, significantly more than the existing terminal. The opening is currently projected for 2028. Once operational, the airport will offer improved connections, modern infrastructure, and better access to eastern Crete. Visitors planning trips to the island after 2028 should note that arrival and departure logistics will change, with new road links and transport options being developed to connect the airport to Heraklion and surrounding areas.
