Back to newsA fire broke out near the secondary school in Kounoupidiana, a village on the outskirts of Chania in western Crete. Firefighting crews responded quickly with significant resources and contained the blaze before it could spread to neighboring buildings. The incident was brought under control without damage to surrounding structures. Kounoupidiana is located close to Chania city and the Chania International Airport, an area many tourists pass through. No disruptions to road access or the airport have been reported. Visitors in the Chania region should remain aware that dry summer conditions in Crete increase fire risk, particularly in areas with vegetation near buildings. If you notice smoke or fire, contact the Greek emergency services by dialing 199 for the fire brigade.
