Crete Leads Greece With 154 Blue Flag Beaches in 2026

Thursday, 14 May 2026/Flashnews/1
Crete has claimed first place in Greece for the 2026 Blue Flag awards, earning 154 Blue Flags across its beaches. The Blue Flag is an internationally recognised certification awarded annually by the Foundation for Environmental Education, recognising beaches that meet strict standards for water quality, environmental management, safety, and facilities. Across Greece, 624 beaches, 17 marinas, and 17 tourist boats received the award this year. For visitors, a Blue Flag beach means clean, regularly tested water, lifeguards on duty during the season, clean facilities, and good waste management. Look for the blue flag flying at the entrance to certified beaches when choosing where to swim. Crete's coastline spans all four regional units, so Blue Flag beaches can be found across the island from Heraklion to Chania, Rethymno, and Lasithi.
