Airplane Tray Tables Harbor More Germs Than Toilets

Saturday, 23 May 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
Studies and flight crew reports consistently identify the tray table as the most germ-laden surface on an aircraft, harboring bacteria counts far exceeding those found on toilet flush buttons. Flight attendants routinely avoid placing their own food or belongings on tray tables for this reason. Cleaning crews do not always disinfect tray tables between flights, meaning surfaces may carry residue from multiple previous passengers. Travelers flying into Heraklion or Chania are advised to carry antibacterial wipes and clean the tray table, armrests, and seatbelt buckle before use. This is particularly relevant during peak summer season when turnaround times between flights are short and thorough cabin cleaning is less likely.
