Rare 1962 Film Captures Kissamos Before Mass Tourism Transformed Crete

Sunday, 14 June 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
A recently surfaced color 8mm silent film from the archive of Dr. G. Hatzidakis offers a rare glimpse of Mavros Molos beach in Kissamos during the summer of 1962. The footage captures the northwestern Cretan coastline as it looked over six decades ago, before mass tourism transformed the island. Kissamos, located in the Chania regional unit on the western tip of Crete, remains one of the less commercialized areas of the island, known for its pebbly beaches, clear waters, and relaxed atmosphere. The Mavros Molos area sits close to the town center and is easily accessible by car or local bus from Chania, approximately 45 kilometers away. For visitors interested in local history and heritage, the Kissamos Archaeological Museum in the town center provides further context on the region's past.
