Crete University Set for €3M Accessibility Upgrades Across 22 Sites

Thursday, 18 June 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
The University of Crete is set to receive 3 million euros to improve accessibility for people with disabilities across 22 of its buildings in Heraklion and Rethymno. The funding was approved by Crete Regional Governor Stavros Arnaoutakis and will cover upgrades such as ramps, lifts, and accessible facilities at university campuses in both cities. For tourists with mobility needs, this signals a broader regional commitment to improving accessibility infrastructure across Crete. Heraklion and Rethymno are two of the island's most visited cities, home to major historical sites, museums, and cultural institutions. While the works target university buildings specifically, visitors with disabilities planning to explore these cities can expect gradual improvements to the accessibility standards of public and institutional spaces in the region over the coming years.
