Back to newsThe head of Greek airports has called for a significant reform of EU border control procedures, describing the current system as both unpleasant and potentially dangerous for travelers. The criticism targets the checks implemented under EU regulations at international entry points, including airports serving popular destinations such as Crete. Long queues and overcrowded processing areas during peak travel season are central concerns. For tourists arriving at Heraklion (HER) or Chania (CHQ) airports this summer, expect delays at passport control, particularly during busy morning and evening arrival windows. Arriving with extra time before connecting transport is advisable. The Greek airport authority is pushing Brussels to modernize the process, potentially through expanded e-gate access for non-EU travelers. No changes are currently in effect, so existing entry procedures remain in place for the 2026 summer season.
