Red Beach: Crete's Hidden Volcanic Gem Draws Renewed Attention

Friday, 3 July 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Red Beach, located near Matala on the southern coast of Crete, is drawing renewed attention for its striking natural landscape and cultural heritage. Known for its distinctive red volcanic cliffs and dark reddish sand, the beach is accessible only by a 15-minute coastal footpath from Matala village or by boat, keeping visitor numbers naturally limited. The surrounding area carries historical significance tied to the free-spirited communities that settled in the Matala cave dwellings during the 1960s and 1970s, attracting travelers from across Europe. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear for the trail, bring their own water and supplies as facilities are minimal, and plan to arrive early in summer months to secure a spot. Nudism is traditional and accepted at Red Beach. The nearest town, Matala, offers tavernas, accommodation, and boat rentals for easier access.
