BOAK safety: Reckless overtaking in construction zone caught on video

Wednesday, 20 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
On Tuesday morning, a driver caused a serious incident on the BOAK, the main east-west highway crossing northern Crete, by attempting an overtaking maneuver in a construction zone with zero visibility. The vehicle moved into the oncoming lane near active roadworks, creating a dangerous situation for other drivers. The incident was caught on video. Tourists driving on the BOAK should be aware that roadworks are ongoing along sections of the highway. Construction zones reduce lane width and visibility, making overtaking extremely hazardous. Speed limits and signage in these areas must be strictly observed. Drivers are advised to allow extra travel time, maintain safe following distances, and avoid any overtaking near marked work zones. The BOAK is the primary road connecting Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos, and western Crete, and is heavily used by rental cars and tourist transfers.
