Heraklion coastal road construction creates major traffic congestion

Thursday, 28 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Road construction work along the coastal road (paraliaki) in Heraklion is causing significant traffic congestion, with delays affecting drivers traveling through the area. The ongoing roadworks have created bottlenecks at the affected section, leading to slow-moving traffic during peak hours. Tourists driving between central Heraklion and the eastern or western parts of the city should expect delays along this route. The coastal road is a main artery connecting the port, the city center, and major tourist areas, so disruptions can affect transfers to and from the ferry terminal and nearby beaches. Visitors are advised to allow extra travel time if driving through Heraklion, consider using alternative inland routes where possible, and check local conditions before heading out. Taxis and rental cars will both be affected by the congestion.
