Sunday, 24 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Princess Anne visited Chania on Saturday, May 23, 2026, to attend a memorial ceremony at the Souda Bay War Cemetery honoring the fallen soldiers of the Battle of Crete. The Battle of Crete (May 1941) was one of the most significant engagements of World War II in the Mediterranean, and Souda Bay holds the graves of over 1,500 Allied servicemen. Her visit concluded with a guided tour of the Cretan Naval Museum in Chania. For visitors, the Souda Bay War Cemetery is located approximately 6 km east of Chania and is open daily at no cost. The Cretan Naval Museum, situated in the old Venetian harbor area of Chania, offers exhibits on the Battle of Crete and local maritime history. Both sites are worth visiting for anyone interested in the island's wartime heritage.
