Kourtaliotis Gorge reopens with new controlled-entry system

Friday, 8 May 2026/CretaOne/1
The Kourtaliotis Gorge, one of Crete's most visited natural sites located in the Rethymno regional unit near Preveli Beach, is set to reopen to visitors under a new controlled-entry system within the coming days. Authorities have approved a managed access model following a safety inspection led by officials, with targeted infrastructure interventions carried out to improve visitor security throughout the gorge. The controlled entry system will regulate the flow of tourists to reduce risk and protect the site. Visitors planning to hike the gorge should expect entry restrictions, possible capacity limits, and designated access windows. It is advisable to check local authority announcements before visiting, arrive early, and follow all posted safety guidelines. The gorge remains one of the most scenic routes on the island, connecting the inland villages to the Libyan Sea coastline.
