Giofyros River Pollution Traced to Sewage Discharge in Crete

Thursday, 28 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Initial laboratory analyses of the Giofyros river, located near Heraklion in central-northern Crete, have pointed to sewage as the likely source of recent pollution visible in the waterway. Earlier concerns about chemical or olive mill contamination have been largely ruled out following the first test results. Authorities are continuing investigations to identify the exact origin of the discharge. The Giofyros flows into the sea near the Heraklion coastline, so visitors planning to swim or use beaches in that area should check local advisories before entering the water until a full clean-up is confirmed. No broader travel disruptions have been reported at this stage.
