Crete Governor Approves €300K Repair Contract for Earthquake-Damaged Cathedral

Wednesday, 20 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
The Regional Governor of Crete has signed a 300,000-euro contract for the repair and structural reinforcement of the Cathedral of Arkalokhori, a village in the Heraklion regional unit. The cathedral suffered significant damage in the September 2021 earthquake that struck the area, leaving the building unsafe and closed to the public. This contract marks a concrete step forward in the long-running restoration effort. Work will focus on structural repairs to stabilize and strengthen the historic church. Visitors traveling through central Crete should note that the cathedral remains inaccessible during construction. Arkalokhori is located approximately 25 kilometers south of Heraklion and can be reached by car in under 30 minutes. No reopening date has been announced yet, but the funding approval signals that restoration is now actively underway.
