On Sunday, May 3, the village of Magarikari in central Crete held a memorial ceremony at its Monument to the Fallen, commemorating victims of the Nazi occupation massacre carried out in May 1944. The event honored residents killed during that period, as well as the legacy of local resistance leader Kapetan Petrakogiorgis, one of the most prominent guerrilla fighters of the Cretan resistance. Magarikari is located in the Rethymno regional unit, inland from the northern coast. The village is accessible by car and holds historical significance for visitors interested in World War II history and Cretan resistance heritage. Memorial ceremonies like this one are held annually and are open to respectful observers. Visitors attending such events are encouraged to dress modestly and follow the lead of locals regarding participation in religious portions of the service.
