Greek Food Prices Surge in 2025, Fresh Produce Hit Hardest

Sunday, 24 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Food prices across Greece, including Crete, have risen noticeably in 2025, according to data from ELSTAT, the Greek national statistics authority. The "Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages" category has been among the hardest hit, with fresh fruit prices seeing sharp increases and discretionary items like ice cream being dropped from household shopping lists by many local residents. For tourists visiting Crete this summer, expect supermarket prices on fresh produce, dairy, and packaged goods to be higher than in previous years. Shopping at local farmers markets (laiki agora) can offer better value on fruit and vegetables. Dining out at tavernas away from main tourist strips will generally be more affordable. Budget accordingly for grocery runs, particularly if self-catering, as everyday items cost more than they did one or two seasons ago.
