A series of earthquakes struck the area near Kasos, a small island southeast of Crete, on Saturday, May 23, 2026. The largest tremor reached 4.4 magnitude, followed by additional shocks including a 3.6 magnitude event. Kasos lies roughly 100 kilometers from the eastern tip of Crete. Seismic activity is common in this part of the Aegean and tremors of this size are generally felt but rarely cause structural damage. No damage or injuries have been reported. Tourists currently in Crete or traveling to the eastern part of the island should monitor local updates, follow guidance from hotel staff, and be aware of standard earthquake safety procedures. Ferry connections to Kasos from ports such as Sitia or Heraklion may be subject to delays; check with your operator before travel.
