High fuel prices in Crete persist despite wholesale cuts

Monday, 1 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Fuel prices across Crete remain high, with the island featuring among the most expensive regions in Greece for petrol. Rethymno province in particular stands out as one of the priciest areas nationally. Diesel is available at select stations below 1.65 euros per litre, though wholesale price reductions have not yet fully translated into savings at the pump. For tourists renting a car, which is the most practical way to explore the island, budget accordingly. Petrol prices vary noticeably between stations and between towns, so it is worth comparing before filling up. Rural and coastal stations tend to charge more than those near urban centres. Carrying a full tank before heading into the interior or along less-travelled eastern and western routes is advisable, both for price and availability reasons.
