Samaria Gorge Open but Hazardous Weather Expected This Friday

Thursday, 11 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Samaria Gorge remains open to visitors, but due to unstable weather conditions, authorities are urging caution for those planning to hike on Friday. The gorge, located in the White Mountains of western Crete and one of the longest in Europe at around 16 kilometres, can be affected by sudden weather changes that create hazardous conditions along the trail, including flash flooding in the riverbed sections. Visitors are advised to check weather forecasts before setting out, wear appropriate footwear and clothing, and carry sufficient water and supplies. Personal protection measures are recommended throughout the hike. The gorge trail typically takes four to seven hours to complete, ending at the coastal village of Agia Roumeli. If weather conditions deteriorate significantly, rangers may close the gorge at short notice, so confirm access on the day of your visit before departing.
