Crete Traffic Reaches Athens Levels as 'Kifissos Syndrome' Spreads

Friday, 12 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Traffic congestion in Crete's main cities has reached levels comparable to Athens, a situation Greek media are calling the "Kifissos Syndrome," referring to one of the capital's most gridlocked corridors. The problem is most severe during peak hours in tourist season, when a combination of rental cars, local traffic, and inadequate road infrastructure causes significant delays on urban roads across the island, particularly in Heraklion and other major towns. Similar conditions are reported in cities as far as Ioannina, suggesting this is a nationwide urban mobility issue. Tourists driving in Crete should plan city transit outside of morning and evening rush hours, typically before 8:00 and after 19:00. Using parking areas on the outskirts and continuing on foot or by local bus into town centers is a practical way to avoid delays during the summer months.
