Greece Cancels APOLLON Energy Subsidy Program, Stranding Crete Communities

Thursday, 18 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
A major Greek energy subsidy program called "APOLLON" has been defunded and cancelled, leaving municipalities, local agricultural water management organizations, and low-income households across the Heraklion region of Crete without expected energy support. The failure was raised in parliament by Heraklion MP Fragkiskos Parasyris, who described the program's collapse as a significant setback for local communities. The cancellation creates financial pressure on local governments and rural irrigation networks that had planned budgets around the program's support. Vulnerable households who were counted on receiving energy assistance are now left without that aid. For visitors, there are no immediate practical disruptions expected. However, travelers staying in rural or agricultural areas of the Heraklion prefecture should be aware that local infrastructure budgets are under strain, which may affect services in some smaller communities over the coming months.
