Back to newsA new regional medical clinic has been established in Askyfou, a village in the Sfakia municipality of the Chania regional unit in western Crete. The mayor of Sfakia described the facility as "not a luxury, but an absolute necessity" for the health safety of the local community.
Askyfou sits on the Sfakia plateau, roughly midway along the mountain road connecting Chania city to the south coast village of Chora Sfakion. The area is a popular transit point for hikers heading to or from the Samaria Gorge and other White Mountains trails. Previously, the nearest medical services were significantly further away. The new clinic improves emergency healthcare access for both residents and the large number of visitors who pass through this remote inland area during the hiking season, which typically runs from April through October.
