Back to newsA utility pole belonging to OTE, the Greek telecommunications provider, has fallen and been left unattended in Agia Roumeli, the small village at the southern exit of the Samaria Gorge in Chania. The pole remains on the ground without any safety barriers or warning signs, causing concern among hikers completing the gorge walk. Tourists passing through the area have expressed worry about potential electric shock risk from the downed pole.
Agia Roumeli is the endpoint for the roughly 16-kilometer Samaria Gorge hike, one of the most popular tourist routes in Crete. Visitors finishing the trail and waiting for the ferry boat back to Sfakia or Paleochora pass directly through this area. Authorities have been called upon to restore the pole immediately. Hikers should be aware of the hazard and keep a safe distance from the fallen pole until repairs are completed.
