Back to newsResidents of Heraklion have staged a protest against plans to establish a closed migrant reception facility at the former Skouloudi warehouse site in the city. Demonstrators gathered outside the building and blocked the Heraklion-Moires national highway as part of their opposition to the project. This road connects Heraklion to the Messara plain in the south of the island. Travelers driving between Heraklion and southern Crete, including destinations such as Matala, Festos, and the Messara coast, should be aware that road closures or delays on this route may occur during ongoing demonstrations. Check local traffic conditions before departing and consider allowing extra travel time if using the Heraklion-Moires highway.
