Greek Airports Up 8% in May; Heraklion Sets New Record

Thursday, 18 June 2026/SourceTornos News/1 min read
Greek airports recorded an 8% rise in passenger traffic in May 2026, with Heraklion International Airport (HER) setting a new record for the month. The increase was reported across all 24 airports managed by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority, despite ongoing instability in the Middle East, which has dampened tourism in competing destinations. Heraklion remains one of Greece's busiest airports, serving as the primary gateway to Crete. The strong figures suggest demand for Crete as a destination is holding firm and growing into the summer season. Travelers flying into Heraklion should expect higher passenger volumes at the terminal, particularly during peak morning and evening arrival windows. Booking transfers and car rentals well in advance is advisable given the increased traffic levels heading into July and August.
