German bunker at Spatha

The northernmost ground of the island of Crete is the Cape of Spatha in Chania prefecture. This strategic location could not have gone unnoticed by the German occupiers during the Second World War, who installed a large bunker with guns, cannons, buildings, arcades, etc. which still haunt this remote place.

The giant cannon bases still cause awe, as they controlled the passage of Cythera. A few meters further south there is a conical mountain, the pyramid of Spatha, for which some believe that it is artificial and is linked to the adjoining sanctuary of Diktynna , the most important temple of the Western Roman Crete.

Access to the area is painful (many kilometers of dirt road), but the sea view is unique.
