Island Overview
A settled early-summer day covers Crete on 6 June 2026. Skies are clear to mainly clear across most of the island, with some partial cloud possible near Sitia, Hersonissos, and Malia. No precipitation is expected anywhere. Daytime highs range from 25.4°C in Sitia to 28.6°C in Elounda, with the rest of the island sitting between 26 and 28°C.
North Coast and South Coast
The north coast is slightly cooler and breezier today. Heraklion reaches 27°C with winds up to 19 km/h; Chania peaks at 27.4°C under lighter conditions at 14 km/h; Rethymno tops out at 26.1°C with a gentle 11 km/h breeze. Overnight lows on the north drop to 18-19°C, so mornings start fresh. The south and east run warmer. Ierapetra, shielded from northerly airflow by the Dikti range, records the highest overnight minimum on the island at 22.1°C and a high of 27.1°C. Elounda and Ag. Nikolaos, at the mouth of the Mirabello Gulf, lead the island on daytime highs, both reaching 28.5°C or above.
Mountain Conditions
The White Mountains above Chania and Psiloritis above Rethymno are noticeably cooler than the coast. Any remaining snowfields above 2,000 metres are retreating fast in these temperatures. Hikers heading above 1,500 metres should carry a light layer; temperatures fall roughly 6°C per 1,000 metres of altitude gained.
Sea State, Wind, and UV
Winds are light to moderate across the island, peaking at 19.4 km/h in Heraklion and 19.1 km/h in Sitia. Makrigialos is the calmest point at 8.6 km/h. Wave heights are minimal: 0.1 m at Rethymno, rising to 0.38 m at Ierapetra. Sea temperatures range from 21.5°C at Ierapetra to 23.2°C at Hersonissos and Malia. The UV index peaks at 8.5 today, placing it in the very-high category. Unprotected skin can burn in under 20 minutes at midday intensity.
Swim Verdict
Conditions are excellent for swimming across the whole island. Water between 21 and 23°C is warm enough for extended sessions, and the sea surface is calm at every monitored location. Rethymno offers the flattest water; Hersonissos and Malia the warmest. There is no reason to avoid the sea today.
Practical Tip for the Day
UV peaks between 11:00 and 15:00. Apply SPF 50 sunscreen at least 15 minutes before sun exposure and reapply after every swim. A wide-brim hat and UV-protective sunglasses are worth carrying even for short walks between sites. Arriving at the beach before 10:30 or after 16:30 will cut your peak UV exposure considerably.
