Back to newsA high fire risk has been declared for Saturday, July 4 across the Heraklion and Lasithi regional units of Crete. Greek authorities issue fire danger ratings on a scale, and both regions are currently at an elevated level due to dry conditions, heat, and wind typical of early July in the eastern part of the island.
Tourists visiting or hiking in these areas should take precautions: avoid open flames, do not discard cigarettes outdoors, and stay away from dry vegetation and forested areas. Barbecues and campfires in non-designated areas are prohibited during high-risk periods and can result in heavy fines.
If you are planning excursions into nature, check local fire danger updates before heading out. In case of a fire sighting, call the Greek emergency number 199 (fire brigade) immediately.
